About Us

HBT is a not-for-profit health and welfare trust that provides group health and welfare benefits on behalf of participating employers for nearly 100,000 eligible employees their eligible dependents, and beneficiaries employed in health care and social services in British Columbia and the Yukon. 

The primary benefits provided by HBT are Group Life, Accidental Death & Dismemberment (AD&D), Weekly Indemnity, Long Term Disability (LTD), Extended Health, and Dental. HBT ensures these benefits are administered in accordance with provisions and plan design negotiated by HEABC, CSSEA, and single-site collective agreements.

Our History

The Trust was established in 1979 by the Health Labour Relations Association (HLRA), now part of the Health Employers Association of BC (HEABC), as the most economical way of providing collective agreement Health and Welfare Benefits for the employees of its members. The legal basis for HBT to provide services and Benefits is an Agreement and Declaration of Trust also known as the Trust Agreement. The original Trust Agreement was between HLRA and the Trustees of the HLRA Health and Benefit Trust effective January 1, 1979. A new Trust Agreement was made between HEABC and the Trustees when the Trust was reconstituted on December 1, 1993.

Participating and Permitted Employers

The Trust was created to provide Health and Welfare Benefits for employees of Participating and Permitted employers and their eligible dependents.

Participating employers are included employers that are members of HEABC and other employers (i.e. Permitted employers) that have received written permission of HEABC to participate in the Trust.

Our membership includes the BC Health Authorities, Affiliates and Community Social Services organizations.
